Abstract Submission Record for ASTRO 2010

Medical Conferences News - ASTRO 2010

The ASTRO 2010 Annual Meeting is the premier scientific meeting in radiation oncology and attracts more than 11,000 oncologists of all disciplines, physicists, biologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals from all over the world.

The American Society for Radiation Oncology ( ASTRO ) has received a record 2,320 abstract submissions for its 52nd Annual Meeting being held October 31 through November 4, 2010, in San Diego, besting its previous record of 2,036 submissions received for the Society’s 50th Annual Meeting held in 2008 in Boston.

“The strength of a meeting is based largely on the strength of the science presented and the ASTRO Annual Meeting has always had a plethora of important scientific information presented,” Anthony Zietman, M.D., ASTRO president and a radiation oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, said. “This record increase in abstracts is very exciting since it will no doubt mean important scientific advances will come out of this year’s meeting. It is also clear that more and more radiation oncology treatment team members from North America and around the world are choosing ASTRO as the venue to present their studies.”

Submissions increased in all three abstract categories as well as from overseas compared to the prior record-breaking year. The number of clinical abstracts rose from 1,301 to 1,524, biology abstracts increased from 178 to 189 and physics abstracts increased from 556 to 607. ASTRO received 300 abstracts from Europe, compared to 240 in 2008, and 431 from Asia, compared to 312 two years ago.

The ASTRO Annual Meeting is the premier scientific meeting in radiation oncology and attracts more than 11,000 oncologists of all disciplines, physicists, biologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals from all over the world. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Gathering Evidence, Proving Value” and will reflect the realities of practicing medicine in 2010 and the urgent needs of the specialty to show its efficacy and prove its worth.
