Philips Announces New Products and Technologies to Strengthen its Integrated Radiation Oncology Solutions

Medical Conferences News - ASTRO 2011

ASTRO 2011Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) is showcasing new products and technologies in its radiation oncology portfolio at this year’s Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

The new offerings from the Brilliance CT Big Bore will address image degradation caused by artifacts and motion through improved acquisition and post-processing. The new Pinnacle³ Professional platform is designed to offer enhanced accessibility and reliability for treatment planning specifically aimed at the mid-sized centers.

Philips understands that image quality is crucial to diagnosis and therapy planning to pinpoint treatment areas and spare healthy tissue. To provide high quality images, the Philips GEMINI TF Big Bore PET/CT comes with Astonish TF 4D time-of-flight (TOF). Pulmonary gating helps to reduce image artifacts often associated with patients’ breathing. Astonish TF TOF technology provides the fastest timing resolution of all currently available PET systems. In addition, the 85cm bore for PET and CT gives clinicians the flexibility to image the patient in treatment position to help improve the accuracy of therapy planning and delivery.

Philips is also showcasing new clinical results from the latest Brilliance CT Big Bore enhancements. A major element is improving CT image quality with metal artifact reduction for orthopedic implants (O-MAR). These artifacts obscure anatomical structures that need to be identified and contoured as part of the treatment planning workflow. O-MAR isolates the effects of large metal objects in the image data to reduce these artifacts.

Used by 80% of the top 10 cancer centers in the United States,[1] Philips’ Pinnacle3 is one of the most reliable systems for radiation therapy treatment planning.2 Pinnacle³ can increase confidence in users and departmental administrators by addressing three key needs: accuracy, flexibility and productivity. Building on these key pillars Philips announces the release of Pinnacle³ Professional. Pinnacle³ Professional is an affordable, scalable and reliable server-class system that provides access from virtually any location. Philips is also showcasing SmartArc with Constant Dose Rate that enables fast treatments without expensive VMAT upgrades.

“Clinicians have come to rely on Philips for our legacy of leading oncology solutions,” said Jay Mazelsky, General Manager, Radiation Oncology, CT & Nuclear Medicine, for Philips Healthcare. “We offer integrated imaging and enterprise-wide treatment planning. Our goal is to provide solutions that are intuitive, accessible and affordable so clinicians can focus attention on the care of their patients.”

The Philips Healthcare radiation oncology portfolio will be on display at ASTRO in Exhibition Area Hall D, booth number 525 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami, FL.
