ASTRO changes its name to American Society for Radiation Oncology by keeping the “T” as the representation of its new tagline, according to press release.
The ASTRO announced in its press release dated 6th January 2009 that it have changed the name of the society from ‘American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology’ to ‘American Society of Radiation Oncology’ but it plans to keep acronym ‘ASTRO’ itself as the representation of its new tagline as ‘Targeting Cancer Care’.
The chief executive officer of ASTRO, Laura I. Thevenot stated in the press release that the new name would be representing their speciality better and that the term ‘Therapeutic Radiology’ is outdated. "The majority of our doctors do strictly oncology procedures," an ASTRO press representative explained to MedicExchange, "and, while some of our members do use other forms, most are not practicing other forms of therapeutic radiology." Thus, Radiation Oncology covers the vast majority of the type of therapeutic radiology that the ASTRO members practice and appears to be a good name change.
