Hartford HealthCare Chooses Technology from Misys Open Source Solutions and Allscripts to Improve Quality, Outcomes, and Efficiency for Its Health Information Exchange
Misys Open Source Solutions, a division of Misys plc (FTSE:MSY.L), announced an agreement with Allscripts and Hartford HealthCare to provide governance consulting services and development for the technology infrastructure that will provide the newly formed Transforming Healthcare in Connecticut Communities (THICC) -- a coalition of Connecticut’s major hospitals, healthcare facilities and physician practices – with interconnected, on-demand access to patient information. Scheduled for production release in early 2010, Misys will deliver the nation’s largest open source health exchange and the state’s first health information exchanges.
THICC will improve healthcare delivery through secure, authorized and electronic patient information sharing. Using an open source, standards-based approach is expected to help promote interoperability between THICC, participating healthcare facilities and physicians who may be using disparate electronic health record systems, so that documents may be shared between THICC members and others participating in the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) – a technology architecture that is part of President Obama’s goal to create a system of digital medical records by 2014 or earlier.
“We recognized that leveraging open source technologies made sense in the area of interoperability and health information exchange creation. Moreover, leveraging standards is critical. We began down this route two years ago but when we saw what Misys had already done at the 2009 Connectathon in Chicago, we were impressed,” said Stephan O’Neill, Vice President, Information Services, Hartford HealthCare. “Misys also has outstanding consulting services. Their HIE governance framework is designed to help us drive toward a consensus with all of our stakeholders from the beginning of the project. It is just what we needed to provide us with the best chance for success.”
Misys is providing a secure, web-based software solution that will help participating community providers to seamlessly view and exchange critical healthcare information among all the community stakeholders – providers, patients, hospitals, labs, and diagnostic centres. Its consulting services are aimed at governance creation and business plan development to ensure that informed decisions are being made and that the value propositions and self-sustainability are being realized.
Additionally, the offering will leverage Allscripts’ strong market presence in Connecticut and will promote the adoption of the Allscripts Electronic Health Record. This will help physician members to act now, ahead of new federal incentives supporting Electronic Health Record adoption that first become available in 2011 and are spread over five years. Independent physicians and group practices that adopt the Allscripts Electronic Health Record will be provided with all necessary Allscripts interfaces to connect them to their existing billing and scheduling software, as well as the information systems of participating hospitals, laboratories and other key healthcare stakeholders across the region.
“Transforming Healthcare in Connecticut Communities (THICC) is truly visionary in its embracing of open source technologies and standards which we believe will become the model for the United States in Health Information Exchange creation. No longer will HIEs be reliant on costly, proprietary interoperability systems that lock the community members into one vendor,” said Bob Barthelmes, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Misys Open Source Solutions.
The creation of the THICC marks a key milestone along the electronic healthcare highway,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. “The THICC members support for our electronic health record, coupled with Misys Open Source’s connectivity technology, will greatly accelerate the THICC return on investment while providing immediate value to the patients and providers in the community. We applaud the visionary leadership of Hartford HealthCare and the THICC coalition partners, many of whom are Allscripts customers, in creating THICC. We look forward to the day when all of Connecticut’s providers participate in the THICC health information exchange.”
