HealthLINC and Rochester RHIO's Executive Directors Selected From 63 Applicants for 2010 AMDIS Awards

Axolotl Corp., the nationwide leader in health information exchange ( HIE ) services and solutions, congratulates Dr. Todd Rowland, Executive Director of HealthLINC and Ted Kremer, Executive Director at Rochester RHIO, for receiving a 2010 AMDIS award. The Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems ( AMDIS ) is a non-profit organization representing over 1,800 physician leaders responsible for information technology in their organizations.

AMDIS announced nine winners for its 2010 AMDIS Awards, recognizing excellence in applied medical informatics. Each year, the AMDIS awards honor the individuals and/or organizations who have successfully applied information systems and computer technology into the practice of medicine.

Dr. Todd Rowland of HealthLINC , an organization leading the health information exchange effort in South Central Indiana, and Ted Kremer of Rochester RHIO, the regional health information organization connecting medical providers across nine counties in New York, are being recognized for the important role they had in successfully implementing Axolotl's Elysium Exchange, a technology system to electronically share clinical information to improve patient care, reduce health care costs, and improve the quality and efficiency of their organizations.

With more than15 years experience as a practicing physician, Dr. Todd Rowland is being recognized for assisting physicians and the health care communities towards advancing their development and implementation of electronic solutions. Under his leadership, HealthLINC became operational in October of 2007 and has consistently increased the depth and breadth of its secure HIE network. As a regional leader for transition to electronic health care systems, HealthLINC provides the necessary infrastructure and tools for physician practices to thrive in today's dynamic health care environment.

"I am honored to be recognized by the AMDIS thought leaders and opinion influencers dedicated to advancing the field of Applied Medical Informatics," said Todd Rowland, Executive Director of HealthLINC. "HIE is making significant impacts in our community - reducing redundant testing, eliminating lost reports, enabling emergency communication and so much more. Bottom line we are improving health outcomes and lowering health care costs."

As the founding executive director for Rochester RHIO, Ted Kremer has led the planning, promotion, and development of the Rochester Regional Health Information Network to improve the quality of care, safety, and efficient delivery of health care services in the Greater Rochester, New York, area. Mr. Kremer is being recognized for being instrumental in the deployment of the Rochester RHIO by raising regional and national awareness to improve the health care system through the efficiency, data accuracy and security of HIE.

"I am pleased to be presented with this award by the AMDIS organization," said Ted Kremer, Executive Director of Rochester RHIO. "In my case I think this award more accurately recognizes the community collaboration in the Rochester region and our desire to consider the larger health care ecosystem, to both bend the cost curve and improve health care quality. This has allowed us to provide physicians with a more comprehensive view of the care their patients receive while positioning us for many of the changes envisioned under health care reform."

"We are pleased to honor Dr. Rowland and Mr. Kremer at the 19th Annual AMDIS - PHYSICIAN-COMPUTER CONNECTION Symposium, July 14-16, 2010 in Ojai, California," said Rich Rydell, CEO of AMDIS. "We look forward to their participation in our HIE discussions."

This year's winners were chosen from among 63 applicants. Judging criteria included:

  • Demonstration of a successful medical information systems/technology application
  • Use of information systems to improve patient care
  • Use of information technology to support a more effective medical practice
  • Use of information systems/technology to improve work flow and contain health costs
