Facilities can capture statistics on frequency and type of study to enhance patient care

Today at the annual meeting for the Society for Computed Applications in Radiology (SCAR), BRIT Systems displayed a component of a discordance tool that facilitates the communication of findings between ER doctors and radiologists.

Typically occurring during overnight emergency department radiology reading coverage, an ER doctor or resident may report an exam or image to be normal when in fact, it was
abnormal. This tool provides a method of communication for the radiologist to alert the ER department that a problem or illness was overlooked.

Representing a joint development between the Roentgen RIS and The Radiology Workbench for Linux, BRIT’s discordance tool lets ER doctors communicate to the radiologists their diagnosis, let's the radiologists to mark any discordance and communicates any discordance to the ER. It also provides statistics on the frequency and types of disagreements.

“BRIT’s discordance tool is truly important for patient care,” said Michelle Fisher, vice president of sales, BRIT Systems. “We are providing an easy-to-use and effective tool for the radiologist to communicate to the ER that some type of follow-up on the patient is required.”

At RSNA 2005, AuntMinnie.com reported on the education use of reporting errors for training residents at the University of Pittsburgh. The poster presentation assessed the
most frequent interpretation errors, which were then classified and categorized. BRIT was educated in the requirement for a tool to address this requirement from Dr. Duc Tran,
one of BRIT's customers at Lima Memorial Hospital in Lima, Ohio.
“Unfortunately, this is an emerging problem, one that must be addressed for PACS to continue positively impacting the quality of patient care,” Fisher added.

This new tool will be available from BRIT in July of 2006
