Improving the diagnosis and treatment of MS patients with Gadovist®1.0 and Betaferon®

Bayer Schering Pharma announced the upcoming launch in China of Betaferon® (interferon beta-1b) for the treatment of relapsing-remitting forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Betaferon is already approved in over 100 countries worldwide. With Betaferon and Gadovist®1.0, which was also recently launched in China, Bayer Healthcare China aims to provide Chinese multiple sclerosis patients with a comprehensive range of services from diagnosis to therapy. Gadovist 1.0, a contrast agent for use in magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI ), has been approved in China for the diagnosis of diseases affecting the central nervous system, including MS, and for blood-vessel imaging.

"MS is a chronic condition that requires treatment using a medication with a favorable profile. With more than 20 years of clinical experience and safety data, Betaferon has a wealth of documentation supporting its benefit-to-risk profile," says Leslie Donato, Vice President, Neurology, Bayer Schering Pharma AG. "For us, supporting our patients comes first. That's why it's so important for us to also give MS patients in China access to Betaferon and a chance to support early diagnosis with Gadovist 1.0."

Approximately 15,000 patients in China suffer from MS, which is one of the most frequent neurological diseases in young adults. The most common initial course of the disease is the relapsing-remitting subtype (RRMS), which is characterized by unpredictable attacks (relapses) followed by periods of relative remission with no new signs of disease activity. In about 80 percent of all cases, the disease advances with worsening symptoms between individual relapses. Typical brain lesions arise early in the course of MS, and these can be visualized and evaluated by MRI . Lesions that appear on a contrast-enhanced MR image indicate that the MS disease process is currently active. Innovative MRI contrast agents such as Gadovist 1.0 have a proven safety profile and are highly suitable for evaluating active brain lesions in MS. By combining high relaxivity, high concentration and high complex stability, Gadovist 1.0 achieves excellent image quality when applied in MRI .
