ACR, SBI leadership to present at FDA hearing on stereotactic breast biopsy and MQSA regulations

ACR to urge lifting of exemption of stereotactic breast biopsy from the MQSA regulations at FDA hearing on November 5. Dr D. David Dershaw, of the ACR Breast Imaging Government Relations Committee and Carol H. Lee, M.D., president of the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) and chair of the ACR Breast Imaging Commission, will urge the U.S. Food and Drug Administration National Mammography Quality Assurance Advisory Committee (NMQAAC), to lift exemption of stereotactic breast biopsy from the MQSA regulations at a November 5 hearing.

The committee will discuss issues related to possible regulation of interventional mammography procedures, such as stereotactic breast biopsy, and receive input from consumer advocates and several professional organizations, including the ACR, SBI, and the American College of Surgeons.

The committee will also receive updates on recently approved alternative standards.

The hearing will take place Monday, November 5, 2007 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. EST at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Rockville, Maryland.
