The EOS system: A Novel Low radiation Alternative to CT in Skeletal Imaging.

The EOS system comprises of an ultra-low-dose 3D x-ray imager along with its new image workstation, sterEOS, which enables 3D skeletal reconstruction. The new system was developed by Biospace med, unique partnership between Nobel Prize-winning physicist Georges Charpak and a team of biomedical engineers, orthopaedic surgeons and radiologists.
The EOS x-ray can capture images of the patient’s whole skeletal system in a standing, weight-bearing position. It gives an accurate image of the weight bearing joints like vertebral joints, hip and knee joints. It also shows the alignments of the vertebrae over one another in the standing, weight bearing position which helps the spine surgeon to precisely plan the surgery. The already existing alternative, the CT (Computed Tomography) scan cannot provide this information.
Another advantage of the EOS system is the considerably low amount of radiation exposure-up to 10 times less than a conventional x-ray and up to 1000 times less than a CT (Computed Tomography) scan.
Additionally, the new sterEOS 3D reconstruction and measurement workstation is designed to reduce surgical planning time and help establish the most effective course of treatment.
"The 3D capability of EOS will be integral to the successful surgical planning of orthopaedic spine procedures and, ultimately, will also be useful for hip and knee replacement surgeries," said Jean-Charles LeHuec, M.D., PhD, Bordeaux Spine Centre, Pellegrin University Hospital, Bordeaux, France.
"We expect the EOS low dose, 3D capability to become a new paradigm for safely and effectively imaging the spine,” added Marie Meynadier, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Biospace med.
Biospace med have already received the FDA approval for marketing the new system. Other than the adult spine, the company has also developed additional software to address paediatric spine and a lower extremity package for hip and knee assessment.
