$200,000 worth of New Equipment now at KHMH

The Endoscope is as a result of direct investment by the KHMH of somewhere in the region of $100,000. The Colposcope is part of a Pan American Health Organization to equip Caribbean countries with the technology for the early detection of cervical cancer.
The Guardian Newspaper visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where significant efforts are being made at the institution to strengthen and improve the quality of service being offered.
Chief Executive Officer at the KHMH, Dr. Gary Longsworth, explains that this week the hospital was equipped with a brand new Endoscope to be used by the in-house gastroenterologist and a brand new Colposcope to be used by in-house gynecologist.
The Colposcope says Longsworth, “is an important adjunct in the treatment of cervical cancer.” Longsworth explains that there have been public health services being provided in institutions outside the hospital that have been referred to the hospital. He says that many times by the time the referral is made it is for surgical procedures to be conducted and “often times these become major surgery because the problem is picked up late. This machine allows to take the diagnosis one step further where the cervix can be visualized to find abnormal areas and to do minor treatment techniques in these areas before they progress to greater problems.”
Both pieces of equipment are very much in demand at the hospital. Longsworth says that over the past several months the KHMH has had had to refer patients outside the hospital for numerous endoscopic procedures all at the hospital’s expense. That is no longer necessary as the machine and the expert in the person of Dr. Mark Musa, a gastroenterologist, are now available at the KHMH.
As or the Colposcope, the service had only been offered to the public on a limited basis in private institutions but never at the KHMH. With the equipment in place and with a gynecologist on staff in the person of Dr. Tracy Nicholas the KHMH will be establishing a dysplasia clinic to accommodate referrals from the primary care clinics in the country.
