Cardiologists to be Trained in Sonography of Arteries

Specialties - Cardiology

Cardiologists to be trained in sonography of the arteries of the heart which will allow them to give a three-dimensional low-down on the blockage.

Nearly 400 cardiologists from all over the country will be imparted training by experts to perform sonography of the arteries of the heart which will allow them to not just see the extent of blockage of the artery but also give a three-dimensional low-down on the blockage like the amount of calcification, fat content and the extent of damage done to the arteries.

This procedure called ' intravascular ultrasound ' will be one of the highlights of the two-day conference of the sixth Trans Radial Intervention Course (TRICO) scheduled to start from Saturday where cardiologists will be trained in performing angiography and angioplasty through the radial artery of the hand instead of the conventional groin route.

Course director of TRICO Dr. Tejas Patel, who is the head of cardiology department at VS Hospital, said that his team has performed over 200 trans-radial intravascular ultrasounds and have found the procedure immensely beneficial.

"We not only come to know more about the blocks but this ultrasound also helps in knowing whether the placement of the stent has been perfect," said Dr. Patel.

Over 20 procedures will be demonstrated live and nine lectures will be imparted by a team of faculty, which includes 15 members from abroad.

Rotational athrectomy, where the catheter is fitted with a metal stent that rotates 1.4 lakh times per minute, will also be demonstrated.
