Dr.Hendel Researching On Cardiac Imaging

Specialties - Cardiology

Dr Robert Hendel, director of cardiac imaging and outpatient cardiology in Miller School of Medicine, hopes to lead expansion and coordination of cardiac imaging at the University of Miami.

Hendel hopes to lead a revival of cardiac imaging research at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine while helping to bring the benefits of cardiac imaging to patients and physicians across South Florida in his new dual roles as director of cardiac imaging and outpatient cardiology in the school's cardiovascular division.

Hendel and  Miller's cardiovascular division chief Moscucci are working on reorganizing cardiovascular imaging across the University of Miami's medical centers, which include Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami, a Veterans Administration hospital, and many outpatient clinics. "Imaging for cardiac disease is being performed [in many locations in the university's system], and yet it has not been really coordinated as ideally as it could have been, and research in that area has been pretty slim," Hendel said.

The university is already involved in several national research initiatives across different cardiac imaging modalities, including CT, MRI, nuclear cardiology, and echocardiography. The University of Miami also recently established a fellowship in cardiac imaging.

"We're going to get the word out and emphasize how these tools can be used to maximize patient care and improve efficiency," he said. "The collaboration between cardiology and radiology is critical, and we want to be the model for a type of approach where there's collaboration in terms of clinical-care research and education between two departments that sometimes have friction. I think we've achieved that."
