Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute among First in nation to use 3-D mapping system of the heart.
Electrophysiologists at Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at Morristown Memorial Hospital Morristown, NJ, announce that their patients are among the first in the United States to benefit from advanced imaging technology used in treating cardiac arrhythmias, commonly known as irregular heart rhythms. This is due to Gagnon’s acquisition this week of the newly FDA -cleared CARTO 3 Navigation System, from Biosense Webster, Inc. Gagnon is the only hospital in New Jersey to use this enhanced system and the only one in the country to use CARTO 3 for an ablation procedure to cure a patient with atrial fibrillation.
The CARTO 3 three-dimensional imaging system allows Gagnon’s physicians to quickly and accurately visualize cardiac anatomy, and it will be especially useful in the treatment of atrial fibrillation, or AFIB. AFIB is the most common type of irregular heart rhythm in the United States, affecting an estimated 5.6 million people, and is increasing due to the rise in the aging population.
“Imaging with the new CARTO 3 System puts us at the forefront of being able to visualize and treat nearly every type of arrhythmia,” said Stephen Winters, MD, director of electrophysiology at Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute. “It also reinforces our commitment to helping the growing pool of arrhythmia patients get fast, effective treatment.”
Similar to a GPS system, CARTO 3 uses a magnetic field with censors that is created around the patient so the catheters can be located in 3-D space. The CARTO 3 System gives physicians the ability to pinpoint the location of these catheters during ablation procedures with unprecedented speed, precision and clarity.
Gagnon offers a full range of interventional and electrophysiology procedures, including catheter ablation — for which we utilize the only FDA-approved catheter for treating AFIB, the NAVISTAR THERMOCOOL Irrigated Ablation Catheter also from Biosense Webster. THERMOCOOL Navigation Catheters are approved for drug refractory recurrent symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, when used with CARTO 3 Systems.
