Helps Educate Tomorrow’s Radiology Professionals, While Supporting International Research Today
Quinnipiac University has selected CoActiv EXAM-PACS for its innovative diagnostic imaging educational center, which provides students in a wide range of imaging-related medical specialties with hands-on experience using a full suite of state-of-the-art technology. The center also provides a focal point for the university’s mummy research project and other innovative non-traditional imaging programs.
Rivaling many university hospital imaging facilities, the Quinnipiac center includes a complete installation of today’s modalities and IT applications and is an integral part of the university’s educational program for imaging technologists (RT), masters RT students and radiologist assistants as well as for nurses, occupational therapists and other medical professionals who frequently use medical images. It also will provide a unique radiology training opportunity for the university’s school of medicine, scheduled to open in 2012.
“Quinnipiac offers a one-of-a-kind learning environment,” explains Bill Hennessy, Director of the Diagnostic Imaging Program. “Our medical imaging center features fully integrated technology from the industry’s leading vendors. When looking for a PACS, we wanted an advanced system that would keep our students in the forefront of the technology learning curve. In addition, we also sought a system that would offer significant imaging functionalities beyond radiology because of our broad-based medical educational programs and university research environment. And we wanted this all this at a reasonable price. It was a tall order.”
Hennessy also points out that in addition to high-quality radiology education, Quinnipiac is also renowned for its unique imaging forensics and bioanthropology programs and is in the forefront of a worldwide network involved in the scanning and analysis of Egyptian mummies. “Quinnipiac has a growing database of CT and x-ray images of mummified remains,” he says. “One of our goals is to become a mummy image central, so to speak. We plan to amass mummy images from around the world and manage them with our new CoActiv technology, in addition to using our PACS for radiology training.”
Hennessy notes that CoActiv EXAM-PACS combines the advanced features and functionality the university sought for its program. From state-of-the-art image analysis tools, including built-in 3D processing, to streamlined image communication beyond the enterprise, CoActiv EXAM-PACS provides a truly advanced image management environment. In addition, it supports storage of diverse patient information, from scanned data such as patient forms and prescriptions, to radiation therapy images and DICOM-RT datasets including treatment plans. “CoActiv was one of the few PACS that could meet our broad range of needs,” says Hennessy, “and the company was willing to work with us to customize the installation to our exact specifications.”
“We are pleased and proud to have been selected provide our PACS to such a prestigious and forward- thinking institution as Quinnipiac University,” comments Ed Heere, president and CEO of CoActiv. “We believe our PACS will play a key role in helping to prepare a new group or radiology professionals, from technologists to physicians, to capitalize on leading edge technology and embrace the challenges of the future. We also are proud to contribute to the unique academic research of this prestigious university. We are very excited and quite anxious to see the results of our EXAM-3D® software, which will be used to create full color 3D reconstructions of CT images from mummies that are thousands of years old. Imagine the potential wealth of new medical information that could be provided on the life, health, evolutionary development and possible cause of death of these ancient individuals.”
The CoActiv installation provides the full CoActiv EXAM-PACS Suite, including EXAM-SERVER™, EXAM-VAULT®, EXAM-SENDER® , EXAM-FILER®, and CoActiv EXAM-3D software (powered by the world renowned Biotronics3D visualization engine). The university center will have a 5.5 TB server and be fully licensed for campus-wide enterprise image viewing. It will be continually upgraded and expanded as needed as the university grows.
Heere notes that the Quinnipiac PACS also will provide all of CoActiv’s cutting edge features. “Our PACS supports a complete range of the latest imaging techniques and provides unrivaled efficiencies for today’s busy radiologists. All our newest technology will be incorporated in the university’s PACS.”
Among these technologies are CoActiv’s Auto Fetching/Routing feature, which identifies and transmits all relevant prior exams from the EXAM-VAULT archive to a diagnostic workstation. It also includes the company’s optional Split-Screen Viewing feature, combining a worklist and image viewer on a single screen as well as custom WorkList filtering.
CoActiv was also one of the first companies to provide bi-directional support for the Apple iPhone and iPad, which will be a major benefit for busy radiology students on the go.
“No other radiology education program has a full imaging center strictly for the use of students,” said Hennessy. “We are extremely excited about adding CoActiv EXAM-PACS to make our facility fully state of the art throughout.”
