Two foetuses were removed from the abdomen of a two-month old male child, Anuj on Saturday. His parents hail from Mirzapur. The

surgery was conducted by paediatricians, Prof Hizbur Rehman and Dr Dhanesh Agrahari of Sarojini Naidu Children Hospital, the paediatric wing of MLN Medical College.

Giving details about the rarest of the rare abnormality which occurs during the 10th to 12th week of the formation of embryo, Rehman said that the child was admitted about two weeks back with a lump in the abdomen. "After conducting the CT scan and other tests, we came to know about the rare abnormality," he added.

The two foetuses were actually twins which entered the abdomen of the third embryo by default, Rehman said. It means that the mother could have given birth to three babies but due to some factors this rare abnormality occurred.

It took around two hours to remove the foetuses. The child is normal after the critical operation and would be discharged after a few weeks.
