RCMC Adds New CT Equipment
| Radiology News - Computed Tomography (CT) |
Red Cedar Medical Center - Mayo Health System (RCMC) in Menomonie has added the new 32-slice Toshiba computed tomography equipment (CT scanner) takes quicker and sharper images.
The new CT scan also uses less radiation to create the images. The first patient scans took place on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
“We are excited to provide a higher performance CT scanner,” says Jerry Tabaka, Radiology director at the medical center. “The new CT will take 32 images at a time, compared to 16 images at a time with the previous machine.”
The equipment’s x-ray sensing unit rotates around the patient’s body and a computer creates cross-sectional images (slices) of the inside of the body. Images from the scanner help diagnose muscle and bone disorders, locate tumors and blood clots, detect and monitor diseases such as cancer and heart disease and detect internal injuries and bleeding.
CT exam volume at RCMC has more than doubled in the last four years. In 2009, over 5,100 exams were completed at the medical center. The CT scanner is consistent with imaging platforms at Luther Midelfort in Eau Claire, also part of Mayo Health System. Most CT exams are completed during clinical hours; however, it is available 24/7.
