Covidien is sponsoring a number of presentations and two symposia on advancements in laparoscopic surgery at SAGES 2010

As part of its commitment to evidence-based medicine, Covidien , a leading global provider of healthcare products, is sponsoring a number of presentations and two symposia on advancements in laparoscopic surgery at the 2010 Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) annual meeting held here.

At these events, key opinion leaders in the surgical community will share clinical insights based on their experiences using the latest technology and techniques for single-incision and other laparoscopic procedures. Several of the speakers also will present clinical trial findings, including interim results from a SILS Port clinical trial and from two bariatric studies featuring Covidien innovations in advanced stapling, the Tri-Staple  and Duet TRS technologies.

Covidien will host two major symposia on April 15, the second day of the SAGES meeting:

  • "Advances in SILS Technology, Technique and Evidence" - a panel of surgeons will discuss the newest single-incision instrumentation, trends and methods. Panel: Dr. Paul Enochs, Bariatric Specialists of North Carolina, Rex Hospital and WakeMed Health & Hospitals; Dr. Shawn Garber, New York Bariatric Group; Dr. Daniel Geisler, Cleveland Clinic; and Dr. Jerry Stirman, Wake Surgical Group.
  • "Insights into the Future of Surgical Stapling: Integrated Materials, Tri-Staple Technology and Powered Staplers" - a panel of surgeons will review advanced stapling instruments, including "intelligent" devices, and their impact on the future direction of laparoscopic surgery. Panel: Dr. Samer Mattar, Indiana University School of Medicine and Clarian Bariatrics; Dr. Garrett Nash, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Weill-Cornell Medical College; Dr. Aurora Pryor, Duke University Medical Center; and Dr. Mark Soberman (moderator), Washington Hospital Center, Washington Cancer Institute and Georgetown University School of Medicine.

In addition to the symposia, there will be a series of speakers on April 14-16 at the Covidien booth. These presentations will examine how the latest innovations are enabling surgeons to perform a broader range of laparoscopic procedures:

  • "Advances in Hemorrhoid Treatment Technology" - Dr. Frank Caliendo, Center for Colon and Rectal Diseases and North Shore-LIJ Health System
  • "The Potential of Power and Intelligent Devices" - Dr. Garrett Nash, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Weill-Cornell Medical College
  • "Discover the Clear Difference in Hemorrhoidopexy" - Dr. John Marks, Colorectal Surgical Associates and Lankenau Hospital
