At MUSE, DR Systems Announces Canadian Medical Device License and will Highlight

Company News - DR Systems, Inc.
DR Systems will announce their Canadian Medical Device License at the upcoming 2009 International MUSE Conference During the upcoming 2009 International MUSE Conference, DR Systems will announce their Canadian Medical Device License for the company’s Unity RIS/PACS as well as featuring their latest Unity Release 8.2 software.

The Canadian Medical Device License was received for the Unity RIS/PACS Software from Health Canada. The license will allow product distribution into Canada and is issued in accordance with Medical Devices Regulations, Section 36.

The new software contains significant innovations that make the Unity PACS a top-tier choice for interoperability with or the replacement for a legacy PACS, and enhanced cost savings with server virtualization capabilities.

DR Systems will be in Booth 215 in the exhibit hall during the meeting. The MUSE conference runs from May 26-29 at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

DR Systems is a PACS industry leader in supporting interfaces within MEDITECH MAGIC® and client server HCIS environments, with installations of this kind at more than 50 hospitals to date. DR Systems and MEDITECH have been interfacing with each others’ systems since 1995, the longest such track record in healthcare.

DR Systems Unity Release 8.2 includes these innovations:
  • Unity access via enterprise-based and physician office EMRs (electronic medical records). Accessing through a Web browser to the EMR allows for clinical review of exam reports, images, and voice clips along with other patient information.
  • CS Series Workstation. This new product series provides facilities with the ability to use the full range of Unity PACS software features on client-supplied hardware.
  • Multiple Volume Support. This capability provides greater system scalability while increasing data safety, configuration flexibility, and system availability.
  • Improved Sentinel remote monitoring capabilities. Sentinel continuously monitors the real-time performance of the PACS to enable proactive customer support from DR Systems. Sentinel looks for errors and processing delays in queues; and tracks the flow of medical images and text reports.
DR Systems will also highlight further developments of these works-in-progress:
  • Operation of the Unity PACS in a virtualized server environment.
  • Interoperability capabilities utilizing advanced DICOM connectivity of its Unity™ PACS to show cross-platform capability
  • The company’s new ZDA (Zero-Download Ambassador), Web browser-based clinical review application
Server virtualization reduces hardware costs, operating costs, and service interruptions. It will enable institutions to use fewer servers, instead of running each application on its own dedicated server. It also will allow radiology departments to continue with full functionality during planned downtimes.

Institutions using virtualization technology can also maintain a greener profile because they consume far less electrical power for their servers. Without virtualization, a hospital might be running several servers 24 hours per day for applications that are used only occasionally. Virtualization eliminates this wasteful, expensive scenario.

Unity Platform DICOM connectivity enables the PACS to interchange DICOM images with systems by other manufacturers. The Unity tools make DICOM images more usable to technologists and reading radiologists than standard DICOM data would otherwise allow. DICOM is a native image format in the Unity PACS Platform.

The new “ultra-thin client”, ZDA (Zero Download Ambassador) will provide significant advantages for institutions already using DR Systems’ Web Ambassador software. ZDA will enable referring doctors and other clinicians to view exams and reports remotely from their home or office computers, or while traveling -- without having to download the software first.
