Force 3 Completes Major Air Force Digital Dental Radiography Transition

Force 3 announced the completion of a four-year, multi-site project with the Air Force Medical Service (AFMS), where the company brought together various vendors to implement the Digital Dental Radiography Solution at 79 Air Force bases around the world.
Force 3, delivering the best in federal security, unified communications and data center solutions, announced the completion of a four-year, multi-site project with the Air Force Medical Service (AFMS), where the company brought together various vendors to implement the Digital Dental Radiography Solution (DDRS) at 79 Air Force bases around the world. Force 3 performed the first deployment of Phase I in 2006 and was officially awarded the Phase II contract in September 2007.
The DDR solution uses state-of-the-art technology to take digital radiographs that eliminate the amount of radiation exposure to both patient and technician by approximately 50 percent. Digital radiographs also allow Air Force dental providers at sites around the world to view, manipulate and share digital images, ultimately making it easier to diagnose and treat dental diseases.
“The change from film-based dental radiology to digital affects nearly 100% of all dental appointments and represents the single most significant change in Air Force dentistry,” said Col. (Dr.) David Stanczyk, AF Surgeon General Consultant for Dental Technology Integration.
The process of taking a radiograph with the DDR solution is very similar to the traditional X-ray film process, making the transition to digital relatively easy for dental technicians. Once the patient is prepared, the technician exposes the digital X-ray sensor to a small amount of radiation and a computer software program captures the high-quality image. Once the digital image is captured, it can be enhanced to view in more detail, saved and shared throughout the Air Force, including the Air Force Reserves and Air National Guard.
Additional Benefits of the Digital Dental Radiography Solution include:
- Improved efficiency and convenience during dental appointments
- Elimination of hazardous waste film processing materials
- Lower long-term costs
The complete DDR solution includes integration of Dell servers and workstations, Microsoft and Symantec server software, Medicor Imaging MiPACS digital imaging software and various digital imaging capture devices. Force 3 integrated the technologies, provided software and training services from various dental vendors such as Kodak, Planmeca and Air Techniques and ultimately created a customized, turn-key solution to transition every Air Force dental clinic from film-based to digital dental radiology .
Specifically, Force 3 was responsible for project management including managing all vendors, planning and site surveying, installation, training and support.
According to Dr. Dennis Stuckey, Air Force DDRS Senior Consultant, “The DDR solution provides global interoperability and connectivity in a secure, environmentally friendly system enhancing the delivery of Air Force dental care. Force 3 brought together a number of vendors and technologies to offer a complete, flexible, scalable, secure DDR solution. Their ability to integrate information technology, dental digital technology and deployment best practices has helped ensure that we deployed DDRS in an expedient and professional manner.”
