Definition of EHR's “Meaningful Use” Applauded
The definition of "Meaningful Use of EHR, proposed by Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services ( CMS ) is being applauded by the healthcare IT Industry.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services ( CMS ) and the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology have announced that the definition of “meaningful use” will include the use of evidence-based order sets and clinical decision support at the point of care.
This is good news because the peer-reviewed scientific literature has repeatedly shown that clinical decision support and evidence-based order sets can save patient lives and reduce overall healthcare costs.
It is clear that 2009 has been a historic year for healthcare reform, with new legislation addressing several major components of how patients receive care. This highly anticipated decision regarding demonstrating “meaningful use” of electronic health record technology provides clarity and guidance to all healthcare organizations and providers seeking reimbursement under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).
