RCMC Implements New EMR System
Red Cedar Medical Center - Mayo Health System will replace its paper medical records with a new electronic medical record system to enhance the quality and safety of the care to the patients.
For medical care, this new environment brings many advantages and benefits:
- Quality and Safety — The EMR includes built-in reminders for preventive services like mammograms and for managing chronic conditions like diabetes. It also alerts providers to information about allergies and other possible medication problems. Easy-to-read prescriptions can be electronically sent to pharmacy. A summary of patient visit and medications is available to the patient for their reference or to take with them when they travel.
- Collaboration and Research — The EMR supports coordinated care between hundreds of physicians in nearly seventy communities across Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin who make up the Mayo Health System. The EMR allows RCMC to study which approaches to a particular disease work best and then use those lessons to improve patient care.
- Privacy and Security — Mayo Health System sets the highest patient-privacy standards. Security and privacy safeguards were a significant factor in our decision-making when selecting this new system. Access to record is restricted, and RCMC electronically monitor that access to ensure that only the appropriate individuals access patient record.
- Reduce Waste — An important benefit of this system, is that results are available to patient caregivers throughout the Mayo Health System, thereby reducing duplication of laboratory tests and x-ray. This saves time, and money.
