Eclipsys Offers Health Facilities Automated Tool to Help Prevent Spread of H1N1 Virus

Company News - Eclipsys Corporation
Proactive Client Offering Based on CDC Recommendations; Customized Clinical Workflow Protocols Designed to Expedite Identification and Quarantine of Infected Patients Eclipsys Corporation (NASDAQ:ECLP), The Outcomes Company, announced the immediate release of an influenza A H1N1 (Swine Flu) Outcomes Toolkit designed to help limit the spread of the H1N1 influenza within hospital waiting areas.

Eclipsys, with an international presence and a significant client base in New York, Texas and California—the U.S. states currently most impacted by the Swine Flu outbreak—has proactively created and made available free of charge to all clients an automated tool based on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) best practices and guidelines in the face of a potential pandemic.

Spearheaded by Eclipsys’ clinical leadership team, the toolkit supports triage personnel in the rapid identification, isolation and treatment of patients who might have the H1N1 influenza. By combining customized documentation templates, orders, clinical alerts and analytics, the tool is estimated to accelerate the identification and isolation process from anywhere from five to 72 hours sooner, as compared to current clinical workflows.

The offering is available via an approximate 10- to 20-minute Web download and works in conjunction the Eclipsys’ Sunrise Clinical Manager™ clinical information system. The solution prompts triage caregivers to assess patients for the presence of acute respiratory disease and accompanying risk factors. If positive conditions are indicated, laboratory orders for influenza screening (including H1N1 Flu-specific orders) are then triggered. Meanwhile the patient is placed on a watch list, followed by the creation of patient education and preventive treatment instructions. In addition, the toolkit allows for the export of data to the CDC.

“In the United States, one in four medical orders placed daily by inpatient clinicians is performed using an Eclipsys system,” said Richard P. Mansour, MD, Eclipsys’ chief medical informatics officer and vice president of Product Innovation. “Given that industry leadership, we are uniquely positioned to help minimize the negative impact of this pandemic and have taken a rapid and proactive response to assist our clients to help better isolate and manage H1N1 symptoms to stave off acute states and slow—or eliminate—the virus’ spread across populations of patients.”

Mansour noted that Eclipsys is unique in offering a comprehensive electronic health record (EHR) system with inherent flexibility and medical logic modules (MLMs) to help proactively address the pandemic and slow its spread. Eclipsys clients are able to customize elements of the free-of-charge toolkit to meet the organization’s specific procedures and clients are positioned to begin using it almost immediately.

The World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 5 on April 29, 2009, indicating that a “strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.”

Eclipsys will continue to monitor the situation closely and modify the toolkit as needed to include new treatment guidelines as issued by the CDC or the World Health Organization.
