XiO treatment Planning system optimizes clinical treatment

World-class software enables efficient and routine deployment of leading-edge cancer therapy
Since March 2009, more than 60 patients have been treated with proton therapy at the Rinecker Proton Therapy Center (RPTC, Munich, Germany). One of the firsts, a 60-year-old man with prostate cancer, was treated using the technique of Single Proton Pencil Beams (spot scanning) and planned with XiO, the industry-leading treatment planning system from Elekta CMS Software.
XiO is a comprehensive treatment planning system that can support a variety of treatment modalities, including 2D, 3D, IMRT, brachytherapy and particle therapy (protons and carbon ions).
The use of proton spot scanning minimizes the need for patient specific beam modifiers that could lead to unnecessary neutron dose. At RPTC, they are innovating treatments with the use of this technique. The delivered individual spots accumulate to a high dose region, which closely encompasses the target volume and minimizes the dose to surrounding organs at risk.
Dr. Jörg Hauffe, CEO of ProHealth AG, which owns RPTC, says planning plays a crucial role in proton spot scanning since a great number of treatment parameters (up to 50,000 spots) have to be managed correctly. “XiO optimizes plans and gives all necessary control to the planner.” Dr. Hauffe’s group calculated a range of deliverable plans which exceeded their expectations.
The collaboration between RPTC and Elekta CMS Software recently led to the latest version of XiO proton software where a deliverable plan is optimized, reviewed and validated on a single system. Dr. Hauffe further commented: “With the current release we are planning more efficiently and are now in the position to plan the treatment of more complex cases, including the head and neck region.”
