Greenway Medical Technologies, Justin Barnes re-elected as the chairman of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's Electronic Health Record Association.

Justin Barnes, vice president of marketing and government affairs at Greenway Medical Technologies Inc., was recently re-elected as the chairman of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's (HIMSS) Electronic Health Record Association. In this role, Barnes will help lead the EHR Association and its membership base through a period when the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is incentivizing physicians and medical practices to adopt electronic health records (EHR) in an effort to save lives, reduce waste and assist with our nation's healthcare transformation.

The EHR Association represents the majority of installed EHR solutions in the U.S. and provides a leadership forum for the health information technology (HIT) and EHR communities that is relative to:

• "Meaningful use" as set by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) HIT Policy Committee
• Standards development and harmonization as set by the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) and the ONC's HIT Standards Committee
• EHR certification as currently set by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT((R)))
• Interoperability, performance and quality measures
• Additional EHR issues that may become the subject of increased government, insurance and physician interest

During his first year as the EHR Association chairman starting in July 2008, Barnes worked on behalf of the Association to help provide a voice for HIT and EHR companies during the federal government's creation and initial implementation of ARRA while helping to define, through expert testimony, the term "meaningful use" into a working model that benefits healthcare providers, healthcare professionals, industry stakeholders and the American taxpayer. During his next term, as the government finalizes EHR certification and EHR meaningful use and prepares to provide eligible professionals with actual incentive checks, Barnes and the EHR Association executive committee will continue working as a voice for all EHR Association members as well as a resource to the federal government as the HIT portion of ARRA continues to provide benefit to physicians, their patients and taxpayers in general.

Barnes currently manages the marketing, strategy, corporate development and government affairs at Greenway Medical Technologies, a leading provider of integrated EHR, practice management and interoperability solutions. In addition to Barnes' re-election as chairman, Mark Segal of GE Healthcare was elected as vice chairman of the EHR Association. Maria Rudolph of eMDs and Charlie Jarvis of NextGen were re-elected to EHR Association executive committee positions and will be joined by Michele McGlynn of Siemens Medical Solutions, Rick Reeves of Computer Programs and Systems Incorporated and Steve Tolle of Allscripts Healthcare Solutions.
