HIMSS launches 2009 Middle East conference to focus on education will be held on May 12-14 in Manama, Bahrain
Vendor exhibition will take a distant back seat to education and clinical IT application at the first HIMSS Middle East conference, to be held in Manama, Bahrain, May 12-14, 2009.
For its entry into the Gulf Region, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society has capped vendor participation to six sponsors, and expects to draw some 500-700 attendees from the region's healthcare IT industry. That's a far cry from its U.S.-based trade show, with its lavish vendor presence and massive attendance.
"We really wanted to start small, and understand the culture and the people better," said H. Stephen Lieber, president and chief executive of HIMSS. "We chose (Bahrain) with this in mind."
The society saw opportunity in an entry into the Middle East region, Lieber said, because leaders in the Gulf Region are making a strong commitment to improving health conditions through information technology. Most of the attendees will be IT professionals, clinicians and government officials.
HIMSS will market the Middle East show more broadly than just the immediate Gulf Region, Lieber added. "I won't be surprised if we get attendees from India and Pakistan as well, and probably some from the U.S. and Western Europe."
The first day of the Middle East show is a symposium during which business leaders will discuss what it's like to do healthcare business in that region. Days two and three include a three-track Healthcare IT and Management Excellence program that will focus on core IT, general healthcare management and clinical IT.
