HIMSS Sessions Highlight Progress, Innovation & Research

Medical Conferences News - HIMSS 2010

HIMSS 2010 (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) annual meeting will take place from 1 to 4 March, 2010 at Atlanta, Georgia World Congress Center.

HIMSS 2010 education sessions bring together nationally recognized speakers to discuss some of the industry's most pressing healthcare and IT concerns. This year's slate of speakers for the ever-popular Views from the Top sessions features renowned industry experts sharing accomplishments, innovations and research.

On March 1, Garth Graham, MD, MPH, will discuss the significant promise for healthcare reform and health IT to reduce care disparities in poor and minority populations. Dr. Graham is the deputy assistant secretary for minority health in the Office of Minority Health at the Department of Health and Human Services, which ensures federal, state and local health programs take into account the needs of disadvantaged, racial and ethnic populations.

Don Goldmann, MD, senior vice president, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, will present a session titled Leveraging Health IT to Improve Health Outcomes on March 2. With over three decades of experience in clinical infectious diseases and epidemiology, with a focus on hospital-acquired infections, Dr. Goldmann's session will focus on quality, and the prevention of medical errors and transmission of infections.

On March 3, Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, Lillian L. Moehlman Bascom professor, School of Nursing and College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison, will review the accomplishments of Project HealthDesign, a $10-million national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in stimulating PHR innovation as well as discuss potential solutions that support the effective use of PHRs in healthcare.

Also on March 3, attendees can hear how one senior-level executive from the world's largest custodial bank, Bank of New York Mellon, is gearing up for investment in the healthcare industry. During Medical Banking: An Emerging Strategy to Improve Global Healthcare, Senior Vice President Al Briand will share how banks can help bring efficiencies to healthcare processing.

On March 4, discover how Kaiser Permanente leveraged health IT and social media to promote active participation of patients, physicians and staff to achieve the best quality outcomes and support the total health of patients. Ted Eytan, MD, MS, MPH, Permanente Federation, and Holly Potter, vice president, public relations, Kaiser Permanente, will discuss the interrelationship of social media and health IT development and implementation, as well as how to build and leverage the right tools to promote participation and engagement.
