A Look at the HIMSS11 Interoperability Showcase

Medical Conferences News - HIMSS 2011

The HIMSS11 Interoperability Showcase will demonstrate the value sets represented in PPOC and eNS.

The nurse’s focus on the response of the individual and family to actual or potential health problems has significant impact on patients/clients who receive care. There are 34.4 million hospital discharges, 116.8 million emergency department visits resulting in 4.8 days for an average length for a hospital stay (CDC, 2010). The need for exchange of healthcare information by nurses between all sites of care and clinicians is crucial to prevention of errors and providing the best possible care.

The value of interoperable electronic health records nursing data includes:

  • Availability of patient and clinical information prior inpatient admission or transfer
  • Early intervention minimized complications
  • Complete clinical information promotes safety and improved outcomes
  • Continuity of care for an interdisciplinary plans of care

Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise ( IHE ) is an initiative by healthcare professionals and the industry to improve the way healthcare computer systems share information. IHE promotes the coordinated use of established standards such as DICOM and HL7 to address specific clinical needs in support of optimal patient care. Systems developed in accordance with IHE communicate with one another better, are easier to implement, and enable care providers to use information more effectively.

At the HIMSS 2011 Interoperability Showcase, there are two nursing profiles to be demonstrated. The Patient Plan of Care (PPOC) and the eNursing Summary (eNS).

Utilizing a use case, PPOC expresses how development of the individualized plan of care including diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation and evaluation of outcomes is necessary to communicate care needs. The nurse treating a patient/client/family may encounter a unique individualized response to a health condition. The ability to quickly assess and chart patient clinical data then sharing the data with the physician or on-coming nurse facilitates continuity of care.

eNS was developed in response to reports of nursing report errors. To ensure consistent information, accurate and concise communication must be present during patient care transitions. Transitions, or “hand-offs,” occur multiple times each day in a hospital and at every change of care location. For example: On a nursing unit of 44 patients with 10 nurses per 12-hour shift, a minimum of 88 reports are given daily. This does not include off unit reports for lunch breaks, special procedures lab, physical or occupational therapy, or general radiology reports on the patient given by the unit nurse.

The HIMSS 2011 Interoperability Showcase will demonstrate the value sets represented in PPOC and eNS. Be sure to take a tour to see how clinical data in nursing documentation can move between care settings and be shared between multiple providers.
