Harris Corporation donated $10,000 to help sponsor the 24th National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic.

The annual event allows hundreds of severely disabled veterans to participate in therapeutic recreational activities — encouraging hope and building confidence to overcome profound disabilities.

The sports clinic, co-sponsored by the Disabled American Veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), will be held March 28-April 2 in Snowmass Village, Colorado. Disabled veterans will learn adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing, and will be challenged with other adaptive sports and activities. Nearly 400 disabled veterans are expected to participate, many with spinal cord injuries, amputations and visual impairments.

"Each year, we witness what we call 'miracles on a mountainside,' when veterans realize the wonder and achievement that life still has to offer," said Santo Trombetta, director of the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. "On behalf of these severely injured service members, we extend our thanks to Harris for its dedication to our nation's wounded warriors and this generous donation."

The donation was presented last night at a reception hosted by Harris during the Health Information and Management Systems Society Conference and Exhibition in Atlanta.

"The Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic creates an environment of promise for our wounded warriors," said Jim Traficant, vice president of Harris Healthcare Solutions. "Every day, these veterans and their families must conquer the challenges of sacrifices they made in service to our nation. Harris is very proud to offer our encouragement and gratitude for their incredible service by sponsoring the Winter Sports Clinic."

Harris is leveraging healthcare information, communication and imaging technologies to enhance the quality and access to care for U.S wounded warriors and veterans.

Harris is delivering global imaging, integration and clinical application solutions for the Department of Defense (DoD) Military Health System (MHS). This work includes the Healthcare Artifact and Image Management Solution (HAIMS) and the Bidirectional Health Information Exchange (BHIE), which links DoD and VA clinical applications under contracts from Evolvent Technologies.

HAIMS will provide DoD hospitals, medical centers, dental and medical clinics with enterprise-wide access, and viewing of healthcare digital artifacts and images. BHIE enables those medical images and artifacts to be shared with the Harris-led VA VistA Imaging program, assuring care continuity for service members from the MHS to VA. In addition, Harris is developing and modernizing the DoD's electronic health record under contract to Planned Systems International.

Harris Healthcare Solutions provides enterprise intelligence solutions and services for government and commercial customers — including systems integration, intelligent infrastructure, advanced visualization and display, enterprise digital content management and IT solutions. A leader in federal healthcare IT integration, Harris products, systems and services improve healthcare outcomes by assuring that critical medical and benefits information is delivered with security and privacy to the right person, on the right device, at the point of care.
