New Electronic Patient system at St. James reduces radiation exposure

Healthcare IT News - Healthcare Informatics

St. James' has introduced innovative decision support software in its electronic patient record to reduce radiation exposure in patients.

St James's Hospital has introduced unique decision-support system within its electronic patient record (EPR) system to reduce the number of unnecessary CTPA scans which may expose patients to radiation. On request from the managers at St. James, Cerner incorporated a checklist based on the Well’s criteria into its  Cerner Discern Advisor clinical decision support solution. The checklist is based on the Well’s criteria which is used to determine the appropriateness of CTPA scan for a patient.  The doctor will be alerted to complete the Wells criteria checklist before they order a CTPA scan for a patient.
