OZ Systems Says PCAST Healthcare Technology Goals are Realistic

Healthcare IT News - Healthcare Informatics

OZ Systems stated that healthcare IT interoperability can be a realistic, near-term goal in public health, and that the goals set forth by the recent President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) report.

OZ Systems, a provider of information management and newborn screening solutions for the healthcare industry, stated that healthcare IT interoperability can be a realistic, near-term goal in public health, and that the goals set forth by the recent President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) report on healthcare technology can be efficiently achieved with technology currently available.

In the December report titled “Realizing the Full Potential of Health Information Technology to Improve Healthcare for Americans: The Path Forward,” the council notes that “achieving the full potential of health information technology will require the development and adoption of a robust information-sharing infrastructure to facilitate the exchange of data among institutions.”

According to Dr. Ken Pool, chairman of the board and chief operating officer for OZ Systems, recent advancements in interoperability can make the goals they outline both practical and achievable in the near future if the industry is willing to make a commitment.

“Interoperability is a major challenge in healthcare. The ability to connect vital information systems seamlessly and communicate effectively among multiple healthcare organizations is essential moving forward as we as an industry and as a nation try to improve the quality of healthcare both here and abroad,” said Pool. “Most of the PCAST recommendations, like the adoption of a ‘universal exchange language’ are very realistic and are currently being developed and supported by some in the industry. But it will take a large-scale, concerted effort by the industry as a whole to truly move the marker.”

OZ Systems has been a key provider in the newborn health and metabolic screening sector for 15 years. The company develops the eScreener Plus (eSP) solution, the world’s most widely-used and proven newborn screening data solution. The Web-based hearing and metabolic screening system offers enhanced interoperability, information management and communications capabilities for public health organizations, hospitals, practitioners and educators. Since 2000, eSP™ has helped protect the health of more than 8 million newborns.
