Shaw Solicitors benefits from speech recognition solution

Healthcare IT News - Healthcare Informatics

Speech recognition is enabling lawyers to spend over 15% more time on fee earning tasks. Fee earners are producing documents at speeds of over 100 words per minute using their voice.

SRC, the UK’s  provider of speech recognition and digital dictation solutions, today announced that the use of speech recognition is enabling lawyers at Windsor based law firm, Appleby Shaw, to spend over 15% more time on fee earning tasks. Fee earners, who previously used tape based dictation and self typing, are now producing documents at speeds of over 100 words per minute using their voice. The solution has also been integrated with the firm’s IRIS ‘laserform’ system making form filling more efficient and less labor intensive. In addition to supplying and deploying the SRC Dragon speech recognition system, SRC provided their legal vocabularies and user training. Speaking about the new solution, which has replaced the existing tape based dictation system, Ayub Baig, Practice Manager at Appleby Shaw Solicitors, said: “The training and set up SRC provided has helped us overcome the challenge of user acceptance and fee earners are using speech recognition on a daily basis.

Immediately after training, users were achieving accuracy rates of over 90% and were saving valuable time which has basically paid for the relatively inexpensive solution within weeks.” Chris Hart, CEO at SRC said: “We are continually helping law firms improve efficiencies with innovative, cutting edge solutions. We are delighted to have helped Appleby Shaw implement a successful speech recognition solution that is saving time and which has delivered a quick return. Speech recognition has really come of age in its ability to help fee earners improve their productivity and the speed at which they can communicate with clients.”

Fee earners dictate into the speech recognition solution using Philips SpeechMike devices. Olympus portable devices are also used for capturing dictations on the move and automatically transcribed using speech recognition once fee earners are back in the office. Other recent SRC speech recognition deployments include the major rollout at Powell Spencer & Partners.
