Essay contest: Cost awareness in health care

The nonprofit organization Costs of Care is holding a national essay contest on healthcare costs.  Judges include Atul Gawande and Michael Dukakis, who will award $1000 prizes for the best anecdotes illustrating the importance of cost awareness in medicine. One prize is specifically reserved for a non-clinician such as a patient or business person.

Rules are as follows:

Entries must be no longer than 750 words and should be typed and double-spaced. Students are strongly encouraged to submit an anecdote. Entries will be judged based on the quality of the writing and the relevance of the anecdote to the topic of cost-awareness in medicine. We are primarily seeking anecdotes. The focus if the contest is not to suggest policy solutions.
