It costs a lot of money for cancer drugs. Why? Well, you can read the article to see some of the reasons though they didn't mention my favorite which is "because they can". That being said, it does beg the question of whether a bankrupt healthcare system can afford a drug like Provenge, a approved in April for prostate cancer, which costs $93,000 a year and only adds four months survival to someone's life. The patient referenced in the article, Bob Svensson, freely admits that he wouldn't pay for it if it were his money. And that, my friends, is the biggest problem with insurance. When you are playing craps with the house's money, why not go for broke?
