What do you do with an 88-year-old man who killed his wife in the nursing home? Roy Charles Laird was a devoted husband for 70 years but his wife became more and more demented. She was placed in a nursing home where she lost her ability to walk, sit up, feed herself or recognize visitors. During a noontime visit he apparently felt she suffered enough and took a pistol and shot her in the head. He didn't put up a fight as a SWAT team surrounded the place and finally arrested him. This story is sad in so many ways. Once again it brings up the issue of euthanasia. Now this guy is going to be dragged through the justice system and no one will know what to do with him. Dementia is horrible. The emotional cost, the suffering, and the financial burden of those people (and their family) who are terminal is immense. Anybody have any solutions to this?
