My Friend, The AMA

Healthcare Blogs - Healthcare Reflections Blogs

I received the following email from the AMA and was amazed - once again. I have blogged about this probably every single year that I have received it but I can't let it go. Sorry.
Here is an organization that represents as little as 20-30% of doctors now. At one time they ran the show. Anyway, as if their ridiculous dues weren't enough, they churn out money by selling information about me. I am in the magazine business so I know how much it costs to rent lists of doctors' names. Here is how the AMA gets that information. See how slimy it is? I will place in bold the statements they use to they and kiss my ass and deceive me. I threw in some comments in the parentheses as well. If you hit the "privacy policy" link at the bottom you will realize there is NO privacy. I am blown away.
This year I tried to the lady (Monica Quiroz) back but so far no response.
Enjoy.

Dear Doctor,

Welcome to the American Medical Association’s (AMA) electronic Census of Physicians. Each year the AMA conducts a census of active physicians to ensure the accuracy of the Physician Masterfile. This year the AMA has contracted Qualtrics, a trusted Web survey software provider, to conduct this online survey enabling you to update your Masterfile record quickly, easily, and most importantly, securely.

As one of the most comprehensive physician databases in the U.S., the AMA Physician Masterfile is a premier resource for many important research and planning initiatives that deal with contemporary issues in the medical profession, including emergency preparedness and response, public health and safety, health care disparities and patient access, workforce shortages and the future of medical education (here is some fluff about helping the world). The Masterfile also serves as a valuable resource to many health care organizations, state and federal regulatory agencies involved in physicians’ credentials verification activities (let's scare you using the word 'credentials').

More importantly, it is vital to you and your practice that you keep your information current. By doing so, you ensure that health care organizations utilizing the AMA Physician Masterfile to verify physicians’ credentials have the most accurate information about you (let's throw in some guilt). You also ensure that your practice continues to receive appropriate and relevant medical information in a timely fashion.

We encourage you to please take this opportunity to update your information through our web-based survey by clicking on the link below. It takes approximately 5 minutes to complete, and if you need assistance or prefer to receive a hard copy survey, you may call an AMA representative at 1 800 262-3211, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Central Standard Time.

Follow this link to the Survey:

As you know, the AMA is the only professional organization dedicated to all of America’s physicians (without us you are nothing). Working together, the voice of America’s physicians grows stronger.
