Radiofrequency and cryotherapy taking greater share of ablation market

Healthcare Blogs - Healthcare Reflections Blogs

Radiofrequency ablation and cryotherapy/cryosurgery will gain the greatest increase in share of the total ablation technologies market worldwide through 2019, with growth coming directly at the expense of all other modalities, according to the 2010 report by MedMarket Diligence, “Ablation Technologies Worldwide Market, 2009-2019: Products, Technologies, Markets, Companies and Opportunities.”

Source: Data drawn from Report #A145, “Ablation Technologies Worldwide.”

Technologies employed in ablation, in addition to RF and cryo,  include electrical, light/laser, ultrasound, thermal, microwave, hydromechanical, radiation and thermal. The modalities demonstrate varying effects on tissues, with greater or lesser capacity to effectively ablation target tissues while minimizing cell death or damage in adjacent tissues. The technologies also vary by the associated capital equipment and, if any, disposable costs.

The net result is that radiofrequency and cryotherapy will gain greater hold of the aggregate market.  To be clear, though, all segments of the ablation market are growing, from a low of about 3% annually for thermal technologies to a high of almost 20% annually for cryotherapy.
