The wagons are circling now. Dr. Mark Midei has been accusing of bilking Medicare out of $3.8 million for putting stents in peoples' hearts when they weren't needed. Ooh, boy, this is going to get ugly. The cardiologist was Abbott's worker bee (read: bitch) in Maryland and now the government is going after him. Even the hospital has come forward and admitted wrongdoing and has already notified the patients . They also paid a $22 million fine. When this all hit the fan, Dr. Midei was barred from doing more stenting but was hired by Abbott as a consultant. That's going to hurt Abbott even more. This whole thing came about via an investigation by the Baltimore Sun who was looking at the abuse of stents at that same hospital, St. Josephs. This brings up the bigger question - are we stenting too many people in general. And if we are, is it due to greed?
