Healthcare Reform: Obama May Announce Next Steps
| Healthcare Reform - Healthcare Reform |
U.S. President Barack Obama may announce next steps in the healthcare reform debate, the White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said during a news briefing.
"The president is going to take the areas that there was some common agreement on and work through those ideas and those issues and will likely make an announcement next week about the next steps forward," Gibbs said. Obama found the summit productive and was pleased that both sides agreed in several areas, but there also were differences, Gibbs said.
Rather than provide a possible timeline for resolving healthcare reform, Gibbs said Obama would take into account what he heard, work through with the team some ideas, and make an announcement about the way forward.
Gibbs also steered clear of the possibility of Democrats using reconciliation, a parliamentary procedure that requires a simple majority instead of 60 votes, to pass a bill.
