Peter A. S. Johnstone, M.D., has been named chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He will begin his new duties Dec. 1.

Dr. Johnstone comes to IU from Emory University School of Medicine where he was a professor of radiation oncology and of hematology/oncology and director of the Cancer Survivorship Program at the Winship Cancer Institute. He served in the United States Navy from 1975 to 2003.

The new chair of Radiation Oncology at IU is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., and a master’s degree in communications from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He completed a residency in radiation oncology at the National Cancer Institute and he also has received specialized training in medical acupuncture at UCLA.

Dr. Johnstone is president of the Society of Integrative Oncology, a non-profit, multi-disciplinary organization of professionals dedicated to studying and facilitating cancer treatment and recovery through the use of integrated, complementary therapeutic options. He is editor of Current Problems in Cancer and serves on several committees within the American College of Radiology, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and the American Radium Society.

He succeeds James G. Morphis II, M.D., the William A. Mitchell Professor of Radiation Oncology, who served as interim chair and then chair of the IU Department of Radiation Oncology since 2004. He has been on the IU School of Medicine faculty since 1980.
