PUMCH Chooses IntraOp’s Mobetron
| Company News - IntraOp Medical Corporation |
Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) in Beijing, China selected IntraOp Medical Corporation 's Mobetron, a mobile technology that delivers IOERT to a tumor site during cancer surgery.
IntraOp Medical Corporation, a provider of intraoperative electron-beam radiation therapy (IOERT) solutions for the treatment and eradication of cancer, announced that the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) in Beijing, China has ordered a Mobetron for its cancer care facility. PUMCH is an affiliate of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and is the second CAMS hospital in China to purchase a Mobetron. Founded in 1921 by the Rockefeller Foundation, PUMCH has long been one of the most prestigious hospitals in China.
IntraOp Medical ’s Mobetron is a mobile technology that delivers IOERT to a tumor site during cancer surgery. The Mobetron enables radiation and surgical oncologists to visually pinpoint the optimal site for radiation by seeing the exposed tumor bed and delivering a concentrated radiation dose during cancer surgery. Since the Mobetron is a mobile, self-shielded device, doctors are able to move the Mobetron among different operating rooms to more efficiently treat a greater number of patients.
This order marks the fifth Mobetron sold in China. It will be the third Mobetron operating in Beijing, along with devices in Beijing General and Beijing Tumor (another CAMS hospital). These are three of the largest and most prestigious cancer centers in China. Since its introduction less than two years ago, hospital surgeons and radiation oncologists have enthusiastically embraced IORT for treatment of a variety of tumors, including pancreatic, breast, lung, colorectal, and sarcomas.
Professor Zhang, the Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at PUMCH noted, “As a general hospital, we need to offer the best options for treating cancer. By offering IORT, we will bring new hope and new treatment for our cancer patients.”
IntraOp Medical CEO John Powers added, ”China has recognized the fact that all the advancements in radiation technology over the last 30 years have been focused on improving the imaging of the cancer and the delivery of the radiation to minimize the impact on the rest of the body. The radiation itself has not changed. IOERT provides the best solution for imaging and treatment delivery with little to no impact on the rest of the body by actually directly treating directly the tumor when it is exposed during surgery. By implementing strong IOERT programs, China will save hundreds of lives and billions of dollars.”
