Karos Health announces their participation in the e-Health Conference in Quebec City

Karos Health, a leader in clinical information exchange software that facilitates collaboration between healthcare providers and patients, announces their participation in the e-Health Conference in Quebec City from May 31st to June 3rd, 2009. Karos’ Rialto software solution will demonstrate immediate and secure access to patient health information residing in multi-vendor clinical information systems and across jurisdictions.

Timely access to patient health information helps healthcare professionals to avoid preventable errors and to guide patients along their journey to recovery. Despite multiple data centers, disparate applications, and incompatible legacy information systems, Karos’ innovative use of open technology, industry standards and superior knowledge of network technology makes clinical information exchange simple.

Real life clinical information exchange challenges solved by Karos’ solution at the Interoperability Showcase
Practical e-Health experiences and lessons will be shared at the conference and Rialto will be at the heart of the e-Health Interoperability Showcase. During this multi-vendor demonstration, disparate clinical systems will leverage industry standards to exchange health information according to a set of typical clinical scenarios.

Rialto is based on open standards and the integration profiles Cross-Enterprise Document Sharing (XDS) and Cross-Enterprise Document Sharing for Imaging (XDS-I) from Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE®). Adherence to these standards enables Rialto to exchange all types of medical data (including diagnostic images) across hospitals and into the community. During the interoperability showcase, Karos will demonstrate key IHE IT infrastructure actors such as XDS Document Registry, Cross Community Access (XCA) Gateways, Patient Demographic Supplier (PDS), and Patient Identifier for Cross Referencing (PIX) Manager, XDS Document Repository and ATNA Audit Repository.

"Using open standards allows healthcare providers to share patient information effectively while preserving legacy systems, reducing integration costs, and preparing for the future" said Rick Stroobosscher, President of Karos Health. "Healthcare providers can now publish, discover, and retrieve all longitudinal patient record information, and collaborate for better patient care."

Karos’ Rialto Navigator web-based viewing application will be demonstrated at the interoperability showcase, providing a patient-centric view of all patient health and imaging information from multiple jurisdictions. Navigator’s technology optimizes access to medical images, with unprecedented functionality, speed and performance. The entire patient record (including images) is available anywhere along the patient’s care journey. Navigator can display orders, prescriptions, clinical reports, medical summaries, as well diagnostic images, supporting the needs of clinicians dealing with complex patients’ issues addressed by multiple providers.

Karos featured in Cisco booth
Karos will be demonstrating its clinical information exchange solution in the Cisco booth. The solution leverages the strength of Cisco’s Application eXtension Platform, making it possible to run on Cisco’s Integrated Service Routers. These routers combine multiple infrastructure services into a single device (network services, security, audio/video, voice, messaging and more), and also integrate advanced applications such as clinical information exchange.

"By integrating the software into Cisco’s intelligent routers, the solution can be deployed as a set of appliances, leveraging the network and router’s security framework" said Rick Stroobosscher. "The network simply becomes the healthcare platform for collaboration, decreasing costs and risks, and simplifying the life of healthcare IT managers."

"This integration allows us to federate large and small health institutions into a virtual collaborative environment with close ties to referring bases" stated Rick Stroobosscher. "Fostering collaboration between healthcare professionals ensures secured, yet shared health data, putting patients at the centre of their own care."
