BlinkRadiology and Clario Medical Imaging announced today that the companies have signed an agreement for clinical collaboration to combine their technologies, improving the way radiologists read medical images. The two companies will initiate a clinical study to test the combination of BlinkRadiology imaging technology for detection of abnormalities in breast MR images and Clario’s z3D technology for interpretation of these findings in breast MR images. Clario will integrate BlinkRadiology technology with their own z3D::Contrast Acuity software to provide radiologists with powerful tools for interpreting medical images. Under the agreement, Clario will license and distribute BlinkRadiology imaging technology to their customers.

Radiologists need tools designed to help detection and interpretation. Technologies to improve the visual perception of the radiologist are needed to help improve efficiency and accuracy. Conventionally, medical images are read by comparing images side by side which can be wearisome for the eyes. With Blink technology, however, the reader looks straight ahead at only one screen as the new and old studies automatically alternate or “blink”. Subtle changes between two image sets easily emerge and readily stand out. Combining this technology with z3D’s visualization tools designed for the interpretation of morphology, radiologists are provided with two powerful tools to assist in the detection and interpretation of medical images.

Blink technology is a powerful image perception technique proven to provide tangible clinical benefits,” said Chris Wood, President and CEO, Clario Medical Imaging. “We are pleased to partner with BlinkRadiology in bringing this technique to breast MR.”

Novel methods for enhancing image perception continue to show increasing value in reading medical images,” said Dr. Matthew Kuhn, Founder and Manager, BlinkRadiology, LLC. “We are excited to work with Clario in bringing these two great technologies to radiologists.”

In a recent study, radiologists’ detection accuracy improved by 20 per cent when using BlinkRadiology imaging technology in detecting abnormalities on MRI, CT and CR examinations. Blink technology improves the accuracy of medical image interpretation by incorporating physiological and psychological mechanisms to take advantage of the human brain’s instinctive attraction to motion. An area of the retina known as the receptive field is specifically intended for motion detection, yet it usually is unexploited when looking at medical images. Similarly, the MT+ areas of the human brain process visual motion information and are ideally suited to assist with image interpretation. With BlinkRadiology imaging technology, the expected and unexpected findings “jump out”, reducing “satisfaction of search errors” and positively influencing riskmanagement techniques.

Once an abnormality is detected, limited spatial resolution and noise can make interpretation of this abnormality difficult, especially for small areas. z3D’s display technique can help improve visualization of subtle detail. 2D images are displayed in 3D using a technique used to enhance visualization of signal intensity changes.

Combining BlinkRadiology technology with z3D will provide radiologists with powerful tools for interpreting medical images, improving efficiency and accuracy of the radiologist.
