Current Concepts of 3T MRI and 1.5T MRI

Radiology News

Today's most improved and recent developments has gone forward to the extend of the intensive use of 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from a research setting to clinical practice.

The new technology of MRI brings along important tools to help and support the physicians improve the accuracy of diagnoses and treatments of broad categories of various diseases like stroke, brain tumors, epilepsy, musculoskeletal and heart disease. With a magnet strength of 3 Tesla, or 3T, the new MRI is the most powerful scanner available to patients today in routine clinical use.

Although the increased magnet strength is in high demand, the benefits are available at no additional expense. This new technology provides the ability to scan faster or to scan with higher detail. It gives us extra contrast enhancement. When you get an injection on contrast on a 3T MRI unit you get twice the enhancement you would get at a lower field strength. For a safer MRI, the new 3T has proved it by all means.

Images of spectacular quality can be produced when taken without movement during the examination. Patients do no realize how important clear image quality is. The most important thing for a radiologist is the image quality. To avail this, we have the fastest and clearest images possible at 3T. The real and actual benefit of 3T MRI systems is the use of fat saturation. This means that the bright fat in the image can be blacked out to view the abnormality much better. The the ability of 3T MRI scanner to view bone detail and trabecular detail better is indeed a distinct advantage. The best breast MRI is done at 3T. MR contrast is much safer than CT contrast. The higher resolution helps see the margins of the tumor more clearly which inturn makes a huge difference in the diagnosis.

3T is faster, clearer, more diagnostic and better for MRI. Having twice the magnet strength, it makes it very relevant to say that 3T is twice as good or even better in performance. The most innovative aspect of this scanner is that it is very or one can say the most spacious scanner inside. The limit of the table weight enables to scan many patients who simply cannot be scanned on any other MRI scanner.

The 1.5T MRI systems are the most chosen these days in well-established protocols, imaging sequences and flexibility in applications and patient accommodation. As the number of increased clinical protocols are created and vendors keep adding new features and software enhancements on a regular basis, the 1.5T MRI installs continue at a steady pace in clinical imaging specialties. This technology is traditionally dominated by the digital x-ray, multidetector CT and nuclear medicine.

When it comes to the comparison of 1.5T with the 3T, 1.5T will always stand one step ahead because of the better image quality across a variety of imaging applications. While 3T is excellent for neurological and musculoskeletal applications, it lags behind in the abdominal imaging and cardiac imaging. Here, again the 1.5T shows moves one step forward. The images related to abdominal imaging and cardiac imaging is very clear and specific. The 1.5T MRI scanner is most put into work on these areas as it proves to be the best.
