MRI Injury Prompts Medical Blanket Recall

Radiology News

Thermoflect blankets, other products recalled following Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) injury.

The FDA has announced a voluntary recall of the Thermoflect brand of heat reflecting blankets and other products so that they may be relabeled to reflect incompatibility with use in "magnetic resonance (MR) environments."

Thermoflect manufacturer Encompass Group initiated the recall after a report of a patient injury prompted an FDA caution on a number of items, including blankets previously considered safe in an MR environment, a company release said.

There is no standard test for the blankets in an MR environment, the company said in a release, and noted that "there is no evidence that the Thermoflect blanket caused the injury."

The company has also sent out replacement product labels to hospitals to remind staff that the product is not considered safe for use in magnetic resonance imaging, an FDA release said.

The Thermoflect line includes blankets, gowns, and dressings used in preventing hypothermia.
