MRI Is Good Enough For Hip Labral Tears

Radiology News

A comprehensive a study suggests that, MRI or magnetic resonance imaging is as good as MR arthrography of hip labral tears which is a frequent cause for painful hips.

The MR arthrography process requires, injection of contrast material into the hip. It is used to detect a hip labral tear that, involves the rim of tissue surrounding it and deepens the hip joint further.

A research comparing the utilisation of MRI with MR arthrography in 30 patients, was presented at the University of Wisconsin. They underwent preoperative imaging with both techniques.

However, investigation is required at greater extent to analyse if customary MRI is an adequate substitute for MR arthrography, majorly, in the estimation of nonspecific pain in hips.

Colin Strickland, MD, lead author of the study said, “Conventional hip MRI and MR arthrogram studies revealed no significant difference between the two imaging techniques in the detection of labral tears for
any of the three readers in our study group, minimally-invasive MR arthrography remains the preferred test for the evaluation of suspected hip labral tears. However our study suggests that conventional,
noninvasive MRI may detect a large percentage of these tears.

The findings of the study were presented at ARRS2010.
