Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ""should be always recommended for optimal surgical planning"" of deep posterior pelvic endometriosis (DPPE), according to Dr. Marc Bazot. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) "should be always recommended for optimal surgical planning" of deep posterior pelvic endometriosis (DPPE), according to Dr. Marc Bazot, from the Tenon Hospital in Paris, France, who presented the findings of his comparative study on Sunday at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR).

Dr. Bazot's investigation aimed to compare the accuracy of transvaginal sonography (TVS), rectal endoscopic sonography (RES) and MRI in the diagnosis of DPPE and to compare the results with surgical and pathologic findings.

His team performed a longitudinal study of 78 consecutive patients referred for surgical management of the disease, who underwent preoperative TVS, RES, and MRI. The diagnosis criteria were similar in all cases based on visualization of hypoechoic or hypointense areas in specific locations (uterosacral ligaments, vagina, rectovaginal septum and intestines).

The results showed that MRI has the highest accuracy in prediction of specific locations of DPPE. The specificity of TVS, RES, and MRI, respectively, were 91.3, 91.3 and 100 per cent for RVS endometriosis.
