MRI machines to be more clearer now !

Radiology News

Victoria General Hospital is installing a powerful $2.2-million magnetic resonance imaging machine that will provide clearer pictures of soft tissues and bone.

Heather Gibson, director of medical imaging for the Vancouver Island Health Authority, said the new MRI will come with a stronger magnet than the existing 12-year-old machine.

It will also be more efficient and take more pictures in a shorter period. MRIs use a powerful magnetic field to create images of various parts of the body.

Last month, the health authority said it was capping MRI scans at 19,000, down from last year's 22,000 in a bid to cut costs. But Gibson said "it's absolutely necessary to even keep up with what we are able to do."
