Philadelphia Seniors Reminded of MRI, Heart Risks

Radiology News

MRISeniors at the Philadelphia Senior Center were screened for heart problems and reminded about the potential risks if they have an implantable device such as a pacemaker and undergo an MRI.

A recent survey done by the National Council on Aging found one in five seniors with devices reported having problems with the device after having an MRI.

It's not that an MRI scan can never be done but there have to be certain safety precautions that have to be followed so that's why we're trying to get the word out about potential safety concerns with MRI scans and pacemakers and it's a discussion the patient needs to have with their physician," said Dr. Arnold Greenspon of Jefferson Medical College.

Dr. Greenspon says that discussion should include how patients will be monitored if they need an MRI.
