Community Radiology Offers Breast Screenings to Uninsured Women

Radiology News - Mammography

Community Radiology Associates (CRA), is collaborating with other healthcare organizations to provide digital mammograms, and where appropriate, ultrasound, to uninsured residents of Montgomery County, MD.

These breast imaging services are provided at CRA's Olney Imaging Center to help uninsured women detect potential breast cancer at an early stage.

"We're excited to improve the breast health in this population," says Gene Perry, regional director of operations, RadNet (Community Radiology's parent company). "As one of the largest providers of digital mammograms in the Washington, D.C. area, we know first-hand how invaluable a mammogram can be in detecting breast cancer early enough to increase the likelihood of successful treatment.  And providing community service is an important part of our mission."

CRA's new breast imaging services are provided in collaboration with the Primary Care Coalition, Montgomery General Hospital (MGH) and Proyecto Salud. In a satellite clinic on the MGH campus, Proyecto offers a range of primary and non-emergency care to adults, including physicals, gynecological exams, flu shots, and basic laboratory services. The Primary Care Coalition is a private, non-profit organization that works with a variety of health partners to provide care to low income, uninsured County residents.

The breast screening clinics are held one morning a week, with Proyecto Salud staff referring appropriate women to CRA for breast screening.  Women who have suspected breast cancer will quickly be referred to physicians, a cancer navigator and other clinical staff as appropriate for follow-up care.
