Fairfield Medical Center is pleased to announce the opening of our new mammography suite on April 5, 2010.

The mammography suite is located on the first floor and is easily accessible from the South Lobby. It offers state-of-the art digital mammography equipment in a tastefully decorated private environment.

Mammography is a specific type of radiology that uses low dose radiation to examine breast tissue. This procedure is used in the early detection of breast diseases in women and men. Digital mammography is similar to a mammogram, but instead of using x-ray film, detectors convert x-rays into electrical signals like a digital camera. These images are displayed on a computer screen for Radiologists to read. Digital mammography has been shown to be more sensitive than standard mammography especially in young women or those with dense breast tissue. For the patient, the digital mammogram is essentially the same experience as having a past mammogram.

Kelly Russell, Fairfield Medical Center Radiology Supervisor, noted, "I am proud to work at a facility that is willing to invest time and money into mammography. Fairfield Medical Center will offer comfort and privacy for patients in this dedicated mammography suite and my hope is that this new service will encourage patients to have regular screening mammograms providing early detection."
